Deployment Strategy not accepted... why is this good news?`

Well, i guess it's never good news when the film doesn't get into a festival, but if you have to get ding'd then this was a pretty cool way to have it done- I got a call from the director of a short film festival (who will not be named). He left me a 5 minute voicemail, and I called him back and spoke to him in person for a while. In summary, he said that he normally has dedicated people screening the applicants, but that he usually tries to take a stack home with him to watch at night. Deployment Strategy was one of them.

He said that he was blown away by the film in its quality and scope, but he was unable to accept the film into his festival. Why? "Well, " he said, "We show 3-5 short films- ya know the hillarious ones you see on youtube and stuff. Your film is an EPIC, ACTION MOVIE. We play short videos, yours is a MOVIE." LOL. He went on to explain that the film's visceral action just made it too difficult to program other videos around it, and that the vibe would just change too much since his festival plays the videos in blocks of time like 1 hour in duration. So he couldn't see how he could play my 30 minute movie with another 30 minutes of funny videos.

He did wish me good luck and he seemed genuine when he said he really enjoyed the film. We talked for a while about other sci-fi/action movies that DS reminded him of. Anyway i thought that was pretty cool of him to call me personally to explain his rational, and it also shows you that films don't necessarily get rejected from festivals because of their individual quality...

In general he is correct and I have also heard that from multiple other festivals as well as being on committees that have judged festivals, festivals look to round out their line up. If someone else has a film similar to yours and they were picked first, they might just take them. Or maybe of the 2 yours was not as good, but yours was still better than some comedy shit, then you might still not get in because the organizers want to round out the lineup.

Who Am I and why in the world... i doing this?? I ask myself this all the freaking time but the conclusion is always the same- I don't know why, all I know is that I just must, must, must make this film...
